The short answer
A martial arts school can rank in nearby towns by building one genuinely unique page per town, with real local content, testimonials from students in that area, and driving directions. Copied pages with only the town name swapped do not rank and can hurt the whole site.
Your school sits in one town, but your students drive in from five. Parents in those towns search "karate in Lakewood" or "jiu jitsu near Cerritos," and your homepage, optimized for your own city, does not show up. Location pages close that gap.
What a real location page contains
- A headline naming the program and the town: "Kids Karate Near Lakewood."
- Honest framing: if the school is ten minutes away in the next town, say so and sell the short drive.
- Driving directions, travel time, and parking notes from that town.
- Testimonials or photos from students who live in that town, if you have them.
- The same trial offer and booking form as your main pages.
- Local details only someone who knows the area would write: landmarks, school districts, neighborhoods.
The doorway page trap
Google explicitly penalizes "doorway pages": dozens of near-identical pages with only the city name swapped. If you cannot write 300 genuinely unique words about serving that town, do not build the page yet.
How many pages, and which towns
- 1Pull your student list and count where current members actually live.
- 2Rank towns by student count and drive time, under about 20 minutes.
- 3Build pages for the top three to five towns first, one at a time, with real content.
- 4Add more only when the first batch is ranking and you can keep the quality bar.
Support the pages with local signals
A location page ranks better when the rest of your presence agrees with it: Google reviews that mention the town, blog posts about local events, and your Google Business Profile service area set to include those towns. SEO is a system of agreeing signals, and the page is just the loudest one.
